Sharon K. Ackerman, born on June 13, 1950 in Urbana, IL, completed her earthly journey on March 19, 2024. The world has lost a radiant soul, a generous heart, and a bright mind, while heaven has gained an angel. Sharon lived a life defined by compassion, generosity, and an unwavering wit that brought joy to all who knew her. Reflecting on Sharon's life, one cannot help but think of the words of Albert Schweitzer, "The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others."
Sharon's life was a testament to her inspiring character. She dedicated her career to education, shaping the minds of tomorrow at the University of Illinois from where she retired. Her academic journey was equally impressive, earning a Bachelors in Finance from DePauw University, and a Masters in Social Work from Florida International University. Sharon had a passion for traveling, discovering the treasures of the world, and indulging in some retail therapy. Her most cherished companion on these adventures was her pet bird, an African Grey named "Jelly Bean".
She is survived by her nephew, David McHenry and his wife Leslie; her sister, Evalyn Lindsey; her brother Duaine Ackerman and his wife Beverly; another sister, Florence Loveless and her husband Bill; her brother Bernard Ackerman; several other nieces and nephews; and her life-long friend, James Hartman. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Hazel Ackerman, and her brother Richard Ackerman.
Sharon's life was a tapestry of love, service, and joy. Her memory will continue to inspire us, reminding us of the words of Maya Angelou, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
