With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James R. Higdon, Jr., a loving and humble man who touched the lives of many with his thoughtful and compassionate spirit. Born on March 15, 1929, in Louisville, KY, James was a beacon of strength and love to his family and friends. His legacy of love and dedication will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Jim  was a man with a love for antique cars. He was most enduring to his faith. He retired as a Food Inspector from the USDA in 1984, but his commitment to service never waned. He was a devout Catholic who lived by the verse, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)

One of is favorite pastime was cheering on the Indiana Pacers and the Indianapolis Colts. However, what mattered most to Jim were his wife, children, grandchildren, and family, who were the center of his world.

Jim is survived by his wife of 38 years, Alfrieda Higdon; step-sons Thomas (Pam) Wilson and John (Julie) Wilson; step-daughters Phyllis Whitted, Kathy (Jerry) Holleran, Linda Walls, Brenda (Bob) Flowers, and Karen Moore (Jim Wehrenberg); brother Robert (Janet) Higdon; sister Mary Barr; daughter in law, Margie Crabtree; sixteen grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lillie Higdon; his first wife, Maxine Higdon; brothers Eugene, Mike, Richard, David, Albert, and Norman Higdon; sister Gerry Winter; grandson Nathan Wilson; son-in-laws Steve Whitted and Randy Moore; and step-son Joe Crabtree.

Public Visitation has been cancelled at Meeks Mortuary on Sunday. A public Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church of Muncie, IN. Mask and Social distancing are both recommended.
